Steam locomotives are a place, they are a place where people gather to marvel in the past and take it all in together. Today, another steam locomotive, Norfolk and Western No. 611, joined the National Register of Historic Places.
Built by N&W’s own Roanoke shops in 1950, the 611 has had now two excursion careers in addition to her time on the N&W roster.
The Register, administered by the National Park Service, currently has over 112,000 listings including several famous steam locomotives such as Nickel Plate Road No. 765, Santa Fe No. 3751, Pere Marquette No. 1225, and Texas & Pacific No. 610 to name a few.
In a social media post, the 611 crew said they intend to have a celebration for the new designation in the spring of 2024.
